episode 55 (w/ guest producer Claude Schryer)

this episode was guest produced by Claude Schryer, an Ottawa-based artist, environmentalist, and soundscape composer. Claude is a former strategic advisor for Canada Council for the Arts, where he worked from 1999 until 2020. since then, Claude has been active in a number of artistic and scholarly communities, including the Canadian Association for Sound Ecology (CASE), where he sits as Chair of the board. in 2020, Claude began a bilingual podcast titled Conscient, which explores the relationship between art and the ecological crisis. Claude was also a co-founder of the Sectoral Climate Arts Leadership for the Emergency (SCALE) in 2021.

this episode follows Claude’s in-person visit to COMS 4501: Digital Media Production in Carleton University’s Communication and Media Studies Program. it is an abridged version of a larger project Claude created titled “60 Minute Cities”, which featured the soundscapes of a series of global cities. Claude’s contribution consisted of soundscapes of Ottawa that he himself recorded, and in this episode, he uses them to bring us on a sonic journey across the city.

a very big thnx to Claude for producing this episode and for giving us the opportunity to listen to some of the recordings that capture signature sounds and moments in the everyday life of the city.
